Depends on what you plan on doing.

Downtown has a lot of touristy stuff but is a pain to get around. We almost never go down there. Scripps Inn in La Jolla is a really cute boutique in right on the cove with fantastic views of one of the prettiest places in California. La Jolla Shores Hotel has less character but is on a great beach. There are smaller hotels in Mission and Pacific Beach if you’re younger and looking for a fun beach bar scene. Paradise Point is a resort on Mission Bay with a great spa. Great place to learn to stand up paddle board. Good luck!
